The Last Family

Everyone is kind of mad today. Dad talked mean to me because I left my Legos out even though they were still in my room. Mom said he is mad. He drove everywhere and couldn’t find anyone.

Dad is putting together the ham radio. I don’t know why it’s called ham. It can hear very far if you work it right and you can talk in it. It’s like a cell phone except it’s big and it might still work. He is putting it in the office. No one can go in there because he has to be careful.

Mom says this was the first day of school. I’m glad it isn’t. That’s one good thing about everyone being gone.

Mom says we are going to homeschool. I wish we didn’t have any school. Claire says we learn enough playing and helping. Mom said that’s not enough to prepare us for…and then she stopped talking. Claire thinks she was going to say “college” but she cried instead. Dad said we would make school fun and learn everything we need to. Garrett asked, like what? Dad said, like geometry for building things and chemistry for making things and medicine and agriculture. Mom said reading and writing and logic so we can think. We need to be civilized. Claire said she wants to learn to be a vet. Mom and Dad were happy about that. Garrett asked if we could learn to make robots. Dad thought about it and then said yes, we could probably do that. I’m not sure he meant it. I hope he did. We could make them fix things and do chores so we wouldn’t have to do so much work.
