The Last Family
by Jeff Wofford

Friday, April 14, 8:11 PM. Trevor.

Claire and I rode bikes today. Mom said Claire needed to get out because she’s been inside too much, being nurse.

We went a long way. We went up our driveway and on the big road. When we got there there was a family of deer, right in the middle. I didn’t have my gun. We tried to get close to them but they ran off.

There is a big field there and I thought it was a lake. I said, “I didn’t know there was a lake by our house.” Claire said, “That’s not a lake, dummy. That’s bluebonnets.” I told Mom Claire called me a dummy.

We went in the bluebonnets and lay down. They smelled nice, like springtime. It was blue in the sky and blue all around. I felt like I was swimming. I said, “We should go swimming when we get home.” Claire said, “It’s still too cold.” I said, “I’m going to try it anyway.” She said, “Okay, maybe I will too.”

We went swimming and it wasn’t too cold. After that we went in the hot tub to warm up. Claire was shivering. After that we had supper. After that we went and sat with Dad for prayer time. He sleeps all the time.

Garrett read to us tonight. He reads slow.
