The Last Family
by Jeff Wofford

Sunday, March 26, 3:15 PM. Garrett.

We slaughtered the steer yesterday. I feel pretty good about it. We got a ton of meat and filled up a freezer full. I did most of the work. Mom and Dad helped a little. Neither one of them can lift much, Mom because she gave birth a couple of weeks ago and Dad because he’s weak these days. Trevor pitched in by grinding the meat and helping with wrapping and stuff like that. Claire didn’t want anything to do with it and just took care of Beth.

We had hamburgers last night. We were almost in tears as we ate them, they were so good. Claire’s tears were maybe for a different reason. Nobody said much. It’s been a long time since we had normal meat. Now we should have plenty for at least a year or so.
