Monday, March 13, 1:15 PM. Garrett.
Our baby sister Elizabeth was born early this morning. Claire woke me up at 4:00 to help. I didn’t want to go into the room and they didn’t ask me. I heard Mom screaming and straining and I was very scared. But she sounded almost mad so I figured she was probably okay. Then the baby cried, a gurgling sound that got clearer and louder with each breath.
After a minute Claire called me in. She had blood all over her hands and shirt and that made me really scared. The baby was like white and cheesy and that was really freaky, but we wiped her off with a towel and she was pink and normal underneath. Her head looks like an alien. She stopped crying when we were wiping her down, which was nice.
I helped Dad do the Apgar test. We learned it last week. Her feet and hands were kind of blue and she didn’t move just a whole lot when we pinched her, so I thought she got an 8 but Claire said it was 9. We tried again a few minutes later and seemed like a 10. Her cry is pretty annoying but it’s kind of breathy, like a fairy’s cry, so it’s not so bad.
Then we gave her to Mom and I left the room so she could feed her.
After a while Claire brought her out and I got Trevor up so he could meet Elizabeth. We sat on the sofa and Claire held her for a while and then I held her. Dad came out and he held her. She pooped really loud and it leaked on him, which made me feel like throwing up but he just laughed. Claire has been practicing diapering dolls like crazy and she wanted to change her. Dad made sure she cleaned up everything okay and she did a pretty good job I guess. Then Dad went to check on Mom. We held her and argued about whether to call her Lizzie or Beth or Eliza. I think Lizzie and Eliza are dumb and I really hope they decide to call her Beth.
After that Trevor and I went out to take care of the animals. Everybody is feeling pretty happy and thankful I think.
