I harvested the wheat crop today. It took a few hours. Dad and I had found a scythe hanging in the barn of another farm. I used that. I had to sharpen it on the grinder. I cut the crap out of my ankle with it. Hopefully it’ll heal up fine.
We got a whole lot of wheat. The rest of the family helped me tie it up in bundles and carry it back across the river. The river is pretty high right now, but last week I made a kind of bridge so we can get across more safely. It’s not as good as what Dad would’ve built, but it’s pretty sturdy. It’s made of long 2x8s I got from the lumberyard. I screwed them together at right angles for strength underneath. It just has ropes for the handrails, but the planks you walk on are pretty sturdy, so the ropes are just in case.
We’ll store the wheat in the shop to dry out. I’ve got to figure out how to make it into flour. Dad had some ideas he showed me so I don’t think it’ll be too bad.
