I've decided that for a site like mine, Google ads are not worth the screen space they occupy. I get decent traffic for a personal blog site. In the past year I've had one $100 pay out—that's it. Since that payout arrived in June 2006, I've had nearly 80,000 visitors, but only $71 in earnings. By the same proportions, if I had a million visitors in that time, I would have earned less than $900. If I wanted to live on ad revenue from my site, then to make $4000 a month I'd need 4.5 million visitors per month. How many sites get that kind of traffic?
I was happy to let Google have its little lot on my site until a couple of weeks back. That's when one of my blog posts went to the top 20 on reddit. I had 13,000 visitors in less than 24 hours. How much did it earn me? $1.69.
I keep my site as an outlet for my games, music, art, and thought. I don't keep it to make money; the Google AdSense thing was just a bonus. So if AdSense gets in the way of people enjoying the site, it simply isn't worth it. I'd rather have an extra 100 visitors than an extra 100 pennies. Frankly, I'd rather have an extra 1 visitor than an extra 100 pennies.
I didn't get rid of AdSense, but I relegated it to the bottom of the page for most of my pages. I'm sure Google would cluck their tongues: "That's going to murder your CTR ratings," they'd say. So what? A tenth of not much is not much. For my site's size and purposes, AdSense hasn't earned its keep.

I am starting to see the same. I too got 10,000+ hits in 24 hours by reddit. Made me a whooping $1,30

Here's the thing - it is all about the type of traffic. I got slashdotted a couple of years back, had crazy traffic but very little payoff (like your reddit experience). Then I worked on the "quality" of traffic - getting the types of visitors that are interested in ads - and with much less traffic made nearly $4k a month writing programming tutorials. Reddit and slashdot users look at one page, then hit the back button - but researchers will poke around and click on your links and ads.

Hey I agree with you Adsense pays pittance, you can make more but you have to add a whole lot of site urls to your Competitor block list - but even then you're only making a few pennies more.
I recommend ABrite http://www.tinyurl.com/yr2yar
- They're quite decent and you can make a lot more as long as you have some traffic. It's quite good and so far my experience with them has been quite good, I only wish they more popular so that there would be even more advertisers at the ready. I like that they allow greater customization of the ads like color and font with CSS, quite nice, also you make money not just on clicks but on showing ads too so as long as someone views your site you make a bit of money.
The main money is in attracting ppl to buy ads, but that actually is quite easy since as long as you pull more then 50+ users a month someone will generally buy ads from your site. I recommend signing up and trying it out for a day, it may make you more, its only good for sites with a traffic, if you get no traffic it's generally futile.
